The feeling of being pampered is second to none – you wouldn’t be wrong if you said that the massage chair was one of God’s greatest gifts to man. That being said, some people are wondering whether or not massage chairs are bad for you?

The answer is – yes and no. Massage chairs, like anything else in this world, can be harmful if they aren’t used correctly. If you use it incorrectly, not only will you not receive the full benefits of the massage chair (which is why you bought one after all), but it can also cause long term ramifications.

Getting a massage from a pro is necessary, but so is using your chair every single day to reap the rewards it has to offer. With that being said, it’s important to know when to use your chair and when you should see a professional therapist.

You may be wondering who exactly is supposed to use the massage chair, but it’s easy enough to answer. Everyone can benefit from using their chair, whether it’s once a week or every single day!
It’s up to you, but it’s important to remember that massage therapy has many benefits. The more often you use your chair, the better off you will be in terms of mental and physical well being.
Who Should NOT Use Massage Chairs?
If you are pregnant, have a pacemaker, or suffer from blood clots, then you should not use your chair. You may be wondering why, and the answer is that all of these conditions could hinder your treatment drastically.
For example, if you’re pregnant – this will cause an incredible amount of pain to be felt where it might not have been had you not been pregnant. If you suffer from blood clots, the sudden movement of a massage chair could cause your blood to start moving through your body again. This is not a problem in most cases, but if you have a pacemaker – it can be fatal!
Your therapist will go over this with you before you begin treatment, but these are a few things to keep in mind. In short – it’s not that massage chairs are bad for you, but rather that there are certain conditions that can be worsened if you use a massage chair.
How Do I Use a Massage Chair?
We’ve already briefly touched on how to use a massage chair, but we’ll go into greater detail here.
First and foremost – if you’re going to use your chair for more than 30 minutes at a time, you should take breaks every so often! This is true whether you want to get a massage from your therapist or you’re using your massage chair.
If your therapist is giving you a massage, they will tell you when it’s best to take breaks and when it’s better not to. You can follow their advice or what we’ve told you here (30 minutes maximum per session), but the bottom line is that use common sense and don’t overdo it!
You shouldn’t eat too much or drink fluids before you use your chair, but consider doing some light stretches beforehand. Not only will this help you with any pain issues (should there be any), but it’s also a great way to prepare yourself for what’s to come.
Lastly – always read the manual. This may seem like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised! We’ve all bought things which were “plug and play” only to find out that it takes more than just pressing the power button. The same applies to massage chairs – read the manual before using them so that you’re familiar with everything they have to offer.
It’s not so much that massage chairs are “bad for you”, but rather that there are certain people who should NOT use them. If you fall into this category, speak with your therapist to find out what options are available to you. Massage therapy is wonderful and has many benefits, but it takes time and effort on both parts (client and therapist) to yield the best results.
